Mini review: Willowgrove by Kathleen Peacock

GoodReads: Ever since Mac's best friend, Amy, was murdered, Hemlock has been a dangerous place. But now that Mac, her boyfriend, Kyle, and Amy's ex, Jason, have investigated a mass breakout from Thornhill, a werewolf "rehabilitation" camp, the danger has only grown. Fear of the infection spreading is now at an all-time high, and anyone with a scar is suspected of being a wolf.

What makes Mac even more afraid, though, are the dark experiments that the warden of Thornhill was performing on wolves in a secret asylum called Willowgrove. Uncovering the truth about what happened may be the only way for Mac to save everyone she loves and end her nightmares for good.

Prior to becoming a book blogger I read YA PNR books, but after I started book blogging my taste for the genre quickly dwindled to the point where I rarely ever read it anymore. Kathleen Peacock's Hemlock trilogy, however, has had me hooked since book one. It's unique, captivating, and not your usual werewolf story!

In regards to the romance I was a little worried about the "love triangle" *highlight to read spoiler* but thankfully Mac didn't waver from her initial love interest, Kyle. Kyle/Jason/Mac could easily have been a full blown love triangle, but instead Peacock handles the situation wonderfully. The relationship between Kyle and Mac hasn't been easy, they've faced many problems, but I love how in Willowgrove you see them both fighting to make it work.

Speaking of relationships, the one between Kyle and Jason hasn't been easy either. They started of as friends, but like Mac and Kyle they were faced with challenges. It was heartwarming to see them both attempting to get back to a good place, and Jason's character development was great to see, too.

Willowgrove, like the previous two books has a dark tone, which Peacock balances out wonderfully with the occasional burst of humour. Plot wise, I love how after the build up of mystery and suspense everything came together and all the loose ends were tied up.

I would recommend this trilogy to people who enjoy YA Paranormal Romance and also to those who, like me, don't, as you may just be surprised!

  1. I have loved this trilogy from the start as well and was happy with the way things ended. I would love some type of spin off next!

  2. Oh wow! I was rejected practically immediately for this one which sent me in tears! Then Kathleen's tweets from today (11/19) have me in a fret of messiness! I am soooo excited to read this one! I fell in love with this from the getgo as well. Have to remember to preorder this baby so I can get it on release day!

Great review! Though I admit, I couldn't bring myself to read the highlighted text! Too worried! ;)

  4. I'm still so unsure if I want to give this series a try. :/ I'm so sensitive to love triangles, and I worry the Jason character will really annoy me!

  5. I still need to read the first book! I'm hoping to eventually get around to starting this series, especially because Peacock is a Canadian author.

  6. Okay, you had me when you said humour. I need some more of that in books, so I am definitely going to be trying this one now.

    Lovely review, Renu! <33

  7. I read the first book of this series, and I remember liking it, although I wasn't totally hooked. I generally like PNR though, although I have to say, it's been quite a while since I read one! Maybe it's time for me to pick up the rest of the series.

I'm loving the sound of the character development. That can be a big issue for me in these kinds of novels, because it seems like so much energy is put into the romance, and the other characters are just kind of there. But, at the same time, I'm not fond of the idea of a love triangle... Those are SUCH a turn off for me. The only one I can remember not hating was the one in Unearthly (have you read that one?!).

However, it's definitely a relief to see that things end up nicely, and everything is tied up at the end. I've been reading a lot of bad series endings lately, which has me hesitant about finishing anything (a conundrum that isn't very good, haha). So glad to see that this book is different!

Awesome review, Renu! It looks like I'll have to be picking up the rest of this series soon!! <3
