Fracture Me by Tahera Mafi

GoodReads Summary: As Omega Point prepares to launch an all-out assault on The Reestablishment soldiers stationed in Sector 45, Adam's focus couldn't be further from the upcoming battle. He's reeling from his breakup with Juliette, scared for his best friend's life, and as concerned as ever for his brother James's safety. And just as Adam begins to wonder if this life is really for him, the alarms sound. It's time for war.

On the battlefield, it seems like the odds are in their favor—but taking down Warner, Adam's newly discovered half brother, won't be that easy. The Reestablishment can't tolerate a rebellion, and they'll do anything to crush the resistance . . . including killing everyone Adam has ever cared about.

I am so annoyed right now.

I love Adam, but this isn't the Adam I've come to know over the past two books. The only thing that felt Adam-like was his love for his brother. This guy, whoever he is, thinks Juliette is some weakling who needs protecting:

"I knew she should've stayed behind. She's not built for this-she's not strong enough."

"The smart thing would be to hide her somewhere. Keep her safe. A weak link can bring everything down with it."

"Kenji and Castle are always blowing smoke up her ass when they shouldn't, and honestly? It's dangerous. It's not good to make her think she can do this kind of thing when really, it'll probably get her killed."

These thoughts both shocked and angered me, because the Adam I know wouldn't think such things.

The tagline on the cover says "I will not lose her" and about half way through the novella he says he's not ready to give up on her or whatever, but towards the end it seems as if he has given up on her. Apparently he's not sure if he wants to rescue the girl who broke up with him and left him and his brother. He also doesn't want to be on the run again and put his brother in danger (which is fair enough, but it completely goes against his character. I thought he didn't want to lose her?) So, Kenji who is desperate to find Juliette (and btw, seems more worried about Juliette than Adam does) has to convince him to come up with a plan to brake her out. Yes, you read correctly. He has to convince him:

"Dude, what the hell are you talking about? Aren't you in love with this girl? Where's the fire under your ass? I thought you would be dying to get to her right now-"

What happened to the Adam that once said:

"You have no idea how much I've thought about you. How many times I've dreamt...how many times I've dreamt about being this close to you. God, Juliette, I'd follow you anywhere. You're the only good thing left in this world.”

Also, when Kenji and Adam were talking about how ruthless Warner is, Juliette's reaction kind of irked me. I get that she saw a softer side to him in Unravel Me, but she couldn't honestly be surprised at the things they were saying.

Prior to reading this I at least had some hope for Adam and Juliette, but now? Nope. It's feel to me like the author was initially set on Juliette/Adam, but suddenly after book 2 she changed her mind and decided Warner/Juliette was end game. Then in order for this to happen she dragged Adam through the mud by basically giving him a complete personality makeover, thus making his character completely unlikable.

  1. I am sorry you didn't enjoy this Renu :(
I didn't even bother starting the series because LOVE TRIANGLE ALERT. I am pretty sure I would have been team Adam like you and would have ended up suffering :/

  2. I'm so hesitant to keep reading this series Renu! I so loved Adam in the first book and now it seems like Warner's novella completely changed everyone's opinions about him and he's now the team everyone's on, and Adam's novella has only reinforced the new Team Warner loyalties. I'm so bummed! I wanted to stick with Adam throughout because normally once I pick a Team I stick with it, but I don't like that Adam sees Juliette as so weak. *sigh* I think maybe I need to wait until all the books are out before I read any more!

  3. Aw. Amazing review, though I'm so sorry it wasn't that good for you :( I only read Shatter Me, about two years ago. I'm not sure I will ever read the next books, because of that damn love triangle. It is the worst thing in the world and I don't get why people like it :( Sad face. That chapter whatever thing? It was the only thing I read of book two and I couldn't have hated it more. So yeah. I'm just interested in the ending of the series.. sigh. But anyway! Enough rambling from me, hih, sorry :D Anyway! I'm sorry you didn't like Fracture Me :\ Fingers crossed that book three will be better. (Though I doubt it. Sigh.) Thank you for sharing. <3

  4. Ohhh I guess everyone on Team Adam has the same reaction as you, Renu. My Team Adam friends certainly are. With the way the story is going, I'm really happy that I didn't like Shatter Me all that much. I didn't know this was going to have a full-on love triangle so it was just as well because I hate love triangles. But hey, still rooting for Adam here. And even if I don't read the rest of the books, I'd still be sad if he doesn't end up with Juliette. :(

  5. I really didn't like Shatter Me but I've kind of been keeping up to date on what people have been thinking about the novellas. I was Team Adam and I knew my heart wouldn't be able to take it so I like a wimp I bailed lol

I hope the conclusion is what you are hoping for at least.

  6. I think I already liked your review on Goodreads, it seems rather familiar. Anyhow, I'm team Adam, no way can I ever be team Warner, but I didn't really enjoy Shatter Me and most of my friends have said that everything turns from bad to worse and I'm honestly not in the mood for this teenage drama. Especially the kind where the love interests are a guy who most of the fandom hates and makes fun of and the mass murderer that everyone adores. I'm sorry you had so many issues with this book. I hope that Ignite Me is everything you hope it'll be :)

  7. After Destroy Me I was torn between Adam and Warner. I tend to like the bad boys but thought Adam was sweet and felt bad so I stayed on the fence. Well Fractured ended that..and I am firmly on Warner's team. This was my least favorite of the series and hate how Adam was depicted

  9. This series is making me feel all nervous and frustrated. I haven't even read this novella, but I don't like what Tahereh Mafi is doing with Adam's character. I loved him in the first book and really don't want to have to start hating him. Also, based on the quotes you shared, he seems very out-of-character here. I'm not looking forward to the final book. :( I'll wait to see what everything thinks of it before deciding whether or not to pick it up. Thanks for the review, Renu! Sorry this was such a disappointment for you.

  10. It seems like there is a love/hate towards this one. I only read Shatter Me and really it's been so long that I'd definitely need to reread it before I finish the series. I don't remember Adam at all. It does sound frustrating how much he's changed, though. I hate it when character "growth" feels more like a down growth if that makes sense lolz. I'm commenting pre-coffee so don't mind me :D

  11. Aww it's a shame you didn't like this one, but I totally understand why you had problems with Adam's point of view. I originally LOVED Adam, but in the second book everyone was saying how Adam came off as whiny and needy, and he definitely sounds overprotective of Juliette and like he thinks less of her. I feel Taherah is favoring Warner now and while I also love his character, I can only think of him as a really great villain as opposed to a love interest for Juliette. I've always loved Kenji's character as well, and he's definitely not afraid to tell people off when they're acting ridiculous, like he did with Adam. He sounds like he's really deserving it with how irrational he's like. >.<

Fantastic review, Renu! <33 Have a fantastic new year.

  12. I recently finished this short story too and wasn't really a fan. It does very contradictory to who Adam was in the first book. Almost like the Author changed her mind and liked Warner more later on. Knowing this was a love triangle, I actually distanced myself from focusing on the romance. I was actually more caught up in the plot of this series.

  13. Oh. My. God. Who is this guy and what did he do to Adam? He definitely doesn't sound like the Adam I know. Although I've been on Team Warner since the first book, I never disliked Adam because I've always thought that he's just a victim of less-than-enough characterization, but when I read this novella I think that's gonna change. I think I'll put it off until I have Ignite Me in my hands, just to be safe.

  14. I've heard that Adam isn't so great in this book :( I'm Team Warner, but I did love Adam in Shatter Me! I think I may still give this a try right before Ignite Me comes out. Thanks for the honest review!

  15. I totally agree with you here Renu. This is far from Adam that we've met in previous books. I mean it's totally okay to go for anther character but I think ruining Adam here was a mistake. :( Great review, Renu :)

  16. Yes!! I completely agree with your points here. I hated this novella, which breaks my heart because I adore this series. I dread posting my review, but it helps knowing I'm not the only who felt this way. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

  17. I am starting this series soon. I think I will skip all the novellas because I for the most part have no patience for them, and this one obviously is a big miss. I hope the finale doesn't disappoint you.

  18. I'm such a Warner fan so while I'm happy that Adam is wishy-washy in this because that means I have more reason to like Warner, I'm sorry that it was annoying for you. Juliette...she's not my favorite and that's because her attitude has annoyed me.
