Social Suicide by Gemma Halliday

Posted by Renu at 05:34 5 comments
GoodReads Summary: Twittercide [twit-er-sahyd]: the killing of one human being by another while the victim is in the act of tweeting.

Call me crazy, but I figured writing for the Herbert Hoover High Homepage would be a pretty sweet gig. Pad the resume for college applications, get a first look at the gossip column, spend some time ogling the paper’s brooding bad-boy editor, Chase Erikson. But on my first big story, things went... a little south. What should have been a normal interview with Sydney Sanders turned into me discovering the Homecoming Queen-hopeful dead in her pool. Electrocuted while Tweeting. Now, in addition to developing a reputation as HHH’s resident body finder, I’m stuck trying to prove that Sydney’s death wasn’t suicide.

I’m starting to long for the days when my biggest worry was whether the cafeteria was serving pizza sticks or Tuesday Tacos...

Thoughts:

In the sequel to Deadly Cool we have a murder mystery, laugh-out-loud moments, Twittercide, crazy antics, and even some romance!
Hartley is now a member of the school newspaper. On her way to an interview with homecoming Queen-hopeful she discovers Sydney Sander's dead body in a pool, and it looks as if she's been electrocuted while tweeting...Twittercide. Once again, Hartley finds herself in the midst of a murder investigation...
I love Hartley, she is, in my opinion one the funniest YA heroines out there. She is as witty and cunning as ever, but she also really matures in this book.
There is a touch of romance in Social Suicide. It's mainly little hints and awkward moments, but what I liked about Halliday's portrayal of romance was that it was realistic, because as we all know real teenage romance is often complicated and sometimes even embarrassing.
I loved the relationship between Hartley and her mum, it's something that's not often present in YA books. A scene I found particular amusing is when Hartley finds out that mum is trying out online dating, her reaction is hilarious!
The murder mystery is one of the best aspects of this series. It's thrilling and not at all predictable. I was constantly trying to figure out who the murderer was and was completely shocked when all was revealed towards the end!

Hemlock by Kathleen Peacock

Posted by Renu at 05:43 8 comments
GoodReads Summary: Mackenzie and Amy were best friends. Until Amy was brutally murdered.

Since then, Mac’s life has been turned upside down. She is being haunted by Amy in her dreams, and an extremist group called the Trackers has come to Mac’s hometown of Hemlock to hunt down Amy’s killer: A white werewolf.

Lupine syndrome—also known as the werewolf virus—is on the rise across the country. Many of the infected try to hide their symptoms, but bloodlust is not easy to control.

Wanting desperately to put an end to her nightmares, Mac decides to investigate Amy’s murder herself. She discovers secrets lurking in the shadows of Hemlock, secrets about Amy’s boyfriend, Jason, her good pal Kyle, and especially her late best friend. Mac is thrown into a maelstrom of violence and betrayal that puts her life at risk.

Kathleen Peacock’s thrilling novel is the first in the Hemlock trilogy, a spellbinding urban fantasy series filled with provocative questions about prejudice, trust, lies, and love.

Thoughts:

When I first started blogging I loved Paranormal Romance, but my love for it quickly began declining to the point where I rarely ever read it anymore. When I read the summary for Hemlock I thought it sounded like every other PR out there...but boy was I wrong!
I thought the plot for Hemlock was going to be predictable, but Peacock has done a fantastic job of keeping readers in the dark. There were so many unexpected twists and turns that I hadn't been anticipating and I was completely shocked when the revelations came to light.
There is a love triangle...well, sort of. I say sort of because both Jason and Kyle like Mac, but Mac only likes one of them and is oblivious to the way the other guy feels about her. I just hope Mac sticks with the one she likes and doesn't start developing feelings for the other, because in my opinion he's a jerk (although I admit I did feel sorry for him at times) and love triangles annoy me to no end.
I love that the author portrayed the werewolves as dark and vicious. It's a refreshing change from the way other YA books have dealt with them - it added realism to the story and made it more enjoyable to read.
Mackenzie is the definition of a strong and independent heroine. She doesn't need guys to come to her rescue as can be seen in the scenes where she tells the guys off for thinking so.
The characters in Hemlock all felt very realistic, my favourite is the guy Mac ends up kissing - he's caring, protective, and swoon worthy!

Thoughts:

Suspense, drama and romance. Slated is a one-sit read that will have you hooked from page one!
London 2054. Criminals under the age of 16 are slated. Their memory's are erased and they're given a second chance to be model citizens - this means being obedient and not questioning the government. Kyla is slated, she's given a new family, a new school, and a chance to become a good member of society. But there's something different about her, she remembers fragments of her past life and beings to question why. Even though it leads her on a path of danger, she is determined to find out the truth. But at what cost?...
The romance between Ben and Kyla didn't really do much for me, I think the book could have done without it to be honest. Ben was likeable enough, but as a love interest he was pretty boring. At this point I'm more interested in learning about Nico, a mysterious young man from Kyla's past.
The idea of Levo's was definitely interesting. Those that are Slated have to wear it on their wrist - 5/6 is the standard happiness level, level 3 is dangerous, and if they're really angry/upset their levels will drop to 2 which leads to blackouts and even death. Why does it cause blackouts/death? To prevent them from harming themselves or society. And if they attempt to take it of? Unbearable pain followed by seizures or even death. Scary, right?!
I liked how layered all the characters were. Dr.Lysander was difficult to read, one minute I disliked her and the next I wasn't so sure. Then there's Kyla's 'mum' and 'dad', and again, my opinion of them changed as the story went on. Every character from Phoebe, and Mrs Ali to Mr Hatten and Amy had more to them than met the eye.
I really admired Kyla, she was a strong and stubborn mc. I enjoyed watching her character develop and grow as the novel progressed. She questioned everything, and even though she was a slated she had a mind of her own. I can't even image waking up one day with no memory of my past life, I would be so lost, but Kyla is not the kind of person to give up. Even when things get rough she's determined to seek out the truth about herself and her past life.
There's tons of suspense and tension in Slated. There was never once a predictable moment, twist and turns were constantly thrown in that shocked me. There wasn't much action as the story mostly revolved around Kyla learning more about herself and trying to piece together her past, but I have a feeling there is action to come in the sequel.

Thoughts:

Wintercraft  is a quick and compelling read!
Jenna Burtenshaw has beautifully crafted together a great mix of characters. Kate is a wonderful heroine, kind and thoughtful, yet also brave and stubborn. I admired her for fighting for the ones she loved and never backing down.
I thought the friendship between Kate and Edgar was sweet. They helped each other out and took risks for one another, even if it meant putting their lives in danger.
My favourite character was the dark and broody, Silas Dane. At first he's presented as the bad guy with a cold and violent exterior, but there's more to him than meets the eye. Even though he did some horrible things, I felt sympathetic towards him and understood why he was the way he was. Props to Jenna for creating such a layered character!
There is no romance, but I'm holding out hope that there will be in book 2.
The detailed and beautiful descriptions of the world made me feel like I was there with Kate on her dark and dangerous journey. Although slow at times, there were plenty of faced paced action scenes that had me hooked and unable to put the book down.
Overall, I loved Wintercraft and would definitely recommend it to fantasy fans.

Thoughts:

"Why be the sheep, when you can be the wolf?"
One of the things that I loved about Grave Mercy was the plot. *pokes summary* "she will be trained as an assassin and serve as a handmaiden to Death" Sounds intriguing, right? Set in 13th century Brittany, Grave Mercy is a unique and action packed read!
LaFevers has created a strong and admirable heroine with great character development. Despite all the hardships life has thrown her Ismae never loses hope, she fights for what she wants and never once backs down.
Grave Mercy is  a great blend of fantasy and historical fiction. At first I was a little wary as I don't really read books with religious connotations, however, I soon found myself so immersed in the story and the characters that it didn't really bother me. So, if like me, it's not usually your thing try giving it a go anyway as it may just surprise you.
There is a touch of romance in GM, and it's the best kind. It builds up slowly, sparks fly, tension rises and then BOOM. *swoons*
I have to admit I was a kind of disappointed when I heard that the next book will be told from another characters perspective. However, if it's as good as Grave Mercy I will definitely be picking it up!
