Forgiven by Jana Oliver

Posted by Renu at 04:25 9 comments
GoodReads Summary: The days are growing darker for 17-year-old demon trapper Riley Blackthorne. With her father’s reanimated body back safely, Beck barely speaking to her because of a certain hunky Fallen angel, and a freshly-made deal with Lucifer, she has enough on her hands to last a normal teenage lifetime. Though she bargained with Heaven to save his life, her ex-boyfriend Simon has told the Vatican’s Demon Hunters that she’s working with Hell. So now she’s in hiding, at the top of everyone’s most-wanted list.

But it’s becoming clear that this is bigger than Riley, and rapidly getting out of control:  something sinister is happening in Atlanta...or someone. The demons are working together for the first time ever and refusing to die, putting civilians in harm’s way. Riley thinks she might know who’s behind it all, but who’s going to believe her? Caught between her bargain with Heaven and her promise to Lucifer, Riley fears the final war is coming – and it may be closer than anyone thinks...

Thoughts:

Forgiven picked up where Forbidden left of and immediately hooked me in.
Riley has definitely matured after her experiences in the previous book. Although she is faced with many obstacles and hardships she still hangs on to the traits that make her an admirable heroine. There are parts where I truly felt sorry for her and what she has had to deal with. I loved her response and attitude towards these problems - she's determined, doesn't take crap from anyone and stands up for the ones she loves. I also like that there are two sides to Riley's life. The demon trapping side and the normal doing homework and hanging out with friends side. It makes her character more relatable and real.
Oliver has a way with characters. The main, and even secondary characters have layers. One of my favourite relationships is the one between Peter and Riley. In Forgiven their friendship is highlighted, and Oliver does a brilliant job of showing that a guy and girl can just be friends.
Also, OMG alert: I disliked Ori after the events that took place in Forbidden, but by the end of this book my feelings for Ori kind of changed...I can't say more without spoiling the book for you guys so I'll leave it at that.

The plot was emotional, unpredictable and exciting. There was never a dull moment and I was constantly trying to guess what was going to happen next. In typical Oliver style while some questions were closed new ones were opened and a bunch of twists and turns were thrown in leaving me desperate to read the fourth and final book in the series!

PS.  Why can't Beck be real? *swoons*

Everyone Boy's Got One by Meg Cabot

            GoodReads Summary:
To: Jane Harris    Fr: Claire Harris     Re: Hi, honey It's me, Mom.
I know it's a big secret that your friend Holly and her boyfriend Mark are eloping in Italy, and that you and Mark's friend Cal Langdon (the handsome New York Journal reporter with the big book deal) are going, too, as their witnesses. But I just saw Holly's mother at the Kroger Sav-On, and I thought I'd warn you: She doesn't seem to like Mark very much at all. Just wanted to let you know.
PS I don't understand why you don't like that nice Cal Langdon He seemed so smart when I saw him being inte viewed on Charlie Rose. And so handsome
PPS Don't forget to wear a sweater.

Cartoonist Jane Harris is delighted by the prospect of her first-ever trip to Europe. But it's hate at first sight for Jane and Cal Langdon, and neither is too happy at the prospect of sharing a villa with one another for a week--not even in the beautiful and picturesque Marches countryside. But when Holly and Mark's wedding plans hit a major snag that only Jane and Cal can repair, the two find themselves having to put aside their mutual dislike for one another in order to get their best friends on the road to wedded bliss--and end up on a road themselves ... one neither of them ever expected.

    Thoughts:

Full of comical diary entries, hilarious emails, and some awesome doodles Every Boy's Got One is a fun and quirky read!
Jane is an eccentric cartoonist who loves popular culture, while Cal Langdon is a reporter and bestselling author of a book on Saudi Arabia's tiring oil fields. They couldn’t be more different and when the two are invited along to Italy by their best friends (who plan on eloping) they immediately take a disliking to each another.

I've always loved the idea of a book written through emails and journals so I was really looking forward to Every Boy's Got One. Once I began reading I just couldn’t stop, the characters were so colourful and full of life that I ended up reading it in one sitting.

Cal and Jane's constant bickering was highly entertaining and I really enjoyed their love/hate relationship. Something that I found particularly amusing was their opposing views on love and marriage - Jane believes that Holly and Mark are meant to be together and thinks it's romantic that they're eloping, while Cal thinks their being naive, he believes love is a chemical imbalance in the brain that doesn't last. LOL!

If you're looking for a cute romantic comedy I definitely recommend this book!

      Thoughts:

The Night She Disappeared is an exciting, fast-paced mystery with a touch of romance.
Gabie works as a delivery girl at Pete's Pizza. One night, Kayla -another delivery girl- goes missing. To her horror Gabie soon realises that it was actually her that was meant to be kidnapped. Teaming up with Drew she makes it her mission to find Kayla.
I loved the various items related to Kayla's kidnapping that were scattered throughout the book such as the fortune cookie messages, police reports, records of evidence, and phone transcripts. It kept things fresh and interesting, and it was really cool seeing the mystery unfold.
The story mostly alternates between Drew and Gabie's perspective, but it sometimes switches to the kidnapper's and Kayla's point of view too. It was horrible reading about Kayla's pain and suffering, I really felt for her. It was also really creepy being inside the kidnappers head.
The main characters, Gabie and Drew, were well-developed and I enjoyed seeing them grow closer together as they tried to deal with their loss and fear. Their relationship was realistic and heartwarming.
The plot is full of suspense that will have you questioning what's going to happen next. It was really unsettling thinking about the fact that Gabie was supposed to be the real target, and I was just as jumpy as she was at the idea of the kidnapper coming back for her.
I devoured The Night She Disappeared in one sitting, and I look forward to Henry's future titles!

"At the sound of my voice, Drew turns and smiles, one side of his mouth lifting higher than the other..I tell myself that it's the five-hundred-degree ovens that makes my cheeks hot."
